Deep Rest - Yoga Nidra & Meditation

“The invitation is to rest in the pure acceptance and love of everything, all the way to the ground.”

About Yoga Nidra & Meditation

Perfect for: Those with at least 6 months of yoga experience who are looking to soothe chronic stress, conquer mental fatigue, and deepen their meditation practice through traditional systematic relaxation

In a world that rarely switches off, deep relaxation and true mental stillness can feel incredibly elusive. If your mind remains busy even when your body is tired, or if you want to expand your meditation practice beyond basic sitting, this class offers a profound antidote.

Deep Rest classes combine gentle movement, conscious breathing, the ancient art of Yoga Nidra (often called dynamic sleep or psychic relaxation) and sitting meditation. Each 1-hour session is a highly structured, meditative journey designed to systematically release physical, emotional, and mental tensions. Under my 25+ years of guidance, you will learn how to guide your brainwaves into states of deep, restorative rest, clearing away mental clutter and leaving you with a lasting sense of inner clarity and silence.

Each weekly class is thoughtfully balanced to help you transition safely out of the busy workday and into profound quietude:

  • Preparatory Asana: A short sequence of gentle physical postures to open the joints, release tight muscles, and prepare your body to sit comfortably.
  • Pranayama & Breath Awareness: Guided breathing techniques to slow your heart rate, balance your energy, and quiet the nervous system.
  • Systematic Yoga Nidra: Lying down completely comfortable while guided through various aspects of Yoga Nidra to access the deep, restorative state between waking and sleeping.
  • Silent Meditation: A grounded meditation to integrate your relaxation, leaving you feeling centred, spacious, and completely renewed.

Common questions about yoga nidra & meditation

While standard meditation is typically practiced sitting up and focusing your mind on an object or the breath, Yoga Nidra is practiced lying down completely still in Shavasana (corpse pose). It is a systematic, multi-stage relaxation technique that mimics the biological process of sleep while keeping your awareness fully awake. This unique state allows your brain to drop into deep alpha and theta wave states, where profound physical repair and emotional integration can take place with absolute ease.

Because this class focuses heavily on deep, internal states of stillness and advanced meditation techniques, having a basic foundation in body awareness is highly beneficial. Knowing how to sit mindfully, regulate your breath, and stay anchored in your body during long periods of physical stillness ensures you can fully absorb the progressive layers of the Yoga Nidra and silent meditation without feeling restless or distracted.

Because your body temperature drops naturally when your nervous system goes into deep relaxation, staying warm is essential for a successful practice. We recommend wearing comfortable, loose clothing and bringing thick socks or a warm sweater. My peaceful Eastbourne studio fully provides comfortable yoga mats, supportive bolsters for under your knees, and soft blankets to wrap yourself in, ensuring you are cradled in absolute comfort.

These weekly 1-hour sessions are held in my quiet, central wellness space in Eastbourne, East Sussex, making them easily accessible for local residents and those traveling from Bexhill, Seaford, Lewes, and Hailsham. This practice is incredibly beneficial for anyone managing corporate burnout, high anxiety, sleep disorders like insomnia, or individuals walking through emotionally taxing life transitions who need a dedicated space to deeply rest.

It is completely normal and very common to drift off into sleep, especially when you first begin or if your nervous system is deeply exhausted from burnout. While the aim of Yoga Nidra is to remain awake at the threshold of sleep, your subconscious mind still hears and fully absorbs my guidance even if you lose conscious awareness. You will still wake up at the end of the session feeling profoundly refreshed, light, and mentally clear.
