Beginners Yoga

“May we enter into this knowing, again and again, giving ourself to Life.”

About Beginners Yoga

Perfect for: Anyone completely new to Satyananda Yoga, individuals returning after a break, or those wanting to build a steady, supportive foundation in body and breath awareness and authentic yoga

If you have been looking for a yoga practice that is gentle, supportive, and completely free of judgment, you are in the right place.

Our Beginners yoga classes provide a slow-paced, nurturing space to introduce your body to the joys of movement and mindfulness. Rather than forcing your body into complex, rigid shapes, we focus on accessible, gentle postures (asanas), restorative breathwork (pranayama) and simple introductory meditation. Led by my 25+ years of experience, this class is designed to help you gently build physical strength, improve your natural flexibility, calm your nervous system, and find a steady sense of inner focus.

Each weekly session is structured to give you a complete, balanced experience of physical movement and deep mental rest:

  • Gentle Postures: Simple, slow movements to unlock stiff joints, improve posture, and build functional strength at your own pace.
  • Conscious Breathwork: Easy breathing techniques to immediately soothe an anxious mind and regulate your nervous system.
  • Introductory Meditation: Grounding mindfulness practices to help you step out of a busy mind and anchor yourself in the present moment.
  • Deep Relaxation: Every class concludes with ‘yoga sleep’ – a comfortable, deep relaxation done lying, leaving you feeling profoundly rested and restored.

Common questions about Yoga of Being

Yes, absolutely. In fact, you are the exact person this class is designed for. A common misunderstanding is that you need to be flexible to do yoga – but yoga is actually how we cultivate flexibility over time. There is no competition, and no one is looking at you. Every posture can be completely modified with blocks, blankets, and bolsters to suit your body’s unique baseline, ensuring you feel completely safe and comfortable throughout the session.

You don’t need any prior knowledge at all. Satyananda Yoga is an internationally respected, deeply holistic style of yoga that integrates the whole person – body, mind, and emotions. Unlike fast-paced gym yoga, it emphasises awareness, slow breathing, and deep relaxation. It is a very grounded, traditional, and gentle system, making it arguably the safest and most therapeutic entry point for beginners.

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows you to move and stretch easily, such as sweatpants, leggings, and a comfortable t-shirt. We practice in bare feet, so no special footwear is required. If you have your own yoga mat, you are very welcome to bring it along; otherwise, mats, supportive bolsters, and warm blankets for relaxation are fully available at my peaceful Eastbourne studio.

Group beginners classes are held in a beautiful, quiet, and dedicated wellness space in the heart of Eastbourne, East Sussex. The location is highly central and easily accessible for residents across the town as well as those driving in from surrounding areas like Willingdon, Polegate, and Pevensey. Detailed directions and nearby parking information will be automatically sent straight to your inbox as soon as you book your spot.

While it is highly recommend booking a consecutive block of classes to truly experience the benefits of building a consistent practice and nervous system routine, I welcome beginners to book an initial taster session. This allows you to experience my gentle teaching style, see the studio space, and ensure the class feels completely right for you before committing further.

“Yoga is far from simply being physical exercises, rather it is an aid to establishing a new way of life which embraces both inner and outer realities. However this way of life is an experience which cannot be understood intellectually and will only become living knowledge through practice and experience.”
